Gardening in National City

National City, California is an excellent place for gardening. National City is considered zone 10a/10b, meaning that we have a very long growing season with very mild winters. Due to this, we can grow some type of food all year long.

There are of course a few downsides. One being that we usually get very little rain, and our soil is less than perfect. Most of the soil in San Diego county is made up of clay and most of the plants that we grow for food does not do well in our native soil. Soil is one of the most important things when it comes to gardening, so this can be a challenge.

Luckily, there are ways to work around this. You can amend the soil with things like compost, or you can grow food in pots, containers or raised beds. Container gardening has a lot of perks. It works well in small spaces, has a lower initial cost than raised beds, and you can place them anywhere.

You probably already have some containers laying around that are suitable. You can use things like 5 gallon buckets, totes, and plastic kiddie pools. Basically, anything that you can drill a few holes in and will hold dirt, can be used to grow plants.

You can grow almost any type of food in pots. Tomatoes, herbs, green beans, peppers, greens, potatoes, and even melons provided the container is large enough.

With the days growing warmer and longer here in National City, it is the perfect time to start or add to your garden.

All of this information can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have. We would be more than happy to talk with you about what kind of plants will suit you and your family's needs.

Happy Planting!
