We aim to make gardening accessible to all families in our community.
About
Gardening can be done by anyone, anywhere. You do not need a large plot of land or a big budget to get started. Our goal is to provide free seeds to anyone with an interest in growing their own food.
FAQ
How does the library work?
You “borrow” seeds from us (more on this in the next answered question), you plant the seeds and watch them grow. We ask that you let at least one plant grow to maturity and save the seeds to give back to us so we can add them back to the library. Returning seeds to us is not a requirement, but it helps us keep the library stocked and is encouraged.
How do I become a member and get seeds?
There is no formal membership, everyone who requests seeds automatically becomes a “member”. Click the “Get Free Seeds” tab to start. Each member can request up to 4 different seed packets at a time. After your request is filled, we will follow up via email or text to arrange a pickup time that works for you. Seed requests are typically filled within 1 business day.
Why National City?
Apart from being a lifelong resident here, National City is considered a food desert. This means that the residents of National City do not have easy access to healthy and affordable food choices. We have no plant nurseries or farmers markets. The Seed Library will make it easier for more people to grow their own food regardless of budget.
Do I have to live in National City to use the seed library?
No. While our main area of focus is National City, we are happy to provide seeds to anyone that wants them.
What is the cost of becoming a member?
Zero. Zip. Zilch. We will never charge for seeds or membership. We do ask that you let at least one plant per season grow to maturity to harvest seeds from and gift back to us, but it is not a requirement.
Can I visit the seed library?
We are currently working on finding locations across the city to set up free seed booths, but for now, we are pick up only and do not have a physical location for browsing. Visit our “current seed stock” page for what we have available and to reserve seeds for pick up. Delivery can be arranged on a case by case basis.
I have never grown food before and I have questions. Can you help?
Yes! Please send us any questions that you may have at any time. We can help you choose seeds that are easy to grow and that will fit your current garden set up. Whether you have an acre of land, or just a few pots to grow in, we can find something that works for you.
Are you a non profit organization?
We are working towards becoming a registered 501c, but we aren’t quite there yet. We are not for profit, and will never charge for seeds.
